How to choose a video card?

The video card is one of the most important components of any personal computer. It is from this detail will depend on the performance of the PC when you are watching a video, playing or working with graphics. Therefore, it is important to know how to choose the right video card.

To do this, pay attention to the following points:

  • video card interface;
  • video card matching processor;
  • cooling and power;
  • CrossFire and SLI technology;
  • GPU;
  • video memory

Video card interface

The interface is the connector through which the video card is connected to the motherboard. Thus, buying a suitable part for your PC, you need to correctly select a video card for the motherboard. It is important that the board necessarily support the interface of the selected video card. To do this, determine the parameters of the connectors that are present on the motherboard. They can be 2 types:

  • AGP (practically not used, since motherboards with similar connectors are considered obsolete and not available)
  • PCI-Express.The interface of today's video cards is called PCI-Ex16. It is divided into versions: 1.0, 2.0, 2.1, 3.0. The larger the number in the title, the better the video card functions.

Matching graphics card processor

As practice shows, a weak processor is not able to work effectively with an overly productive video card. In addition, a video card that is too weak fails to guarantee normal performance, despite the powerful processor. Therefore, it is recommended to observe a certain balance. To do this, you need to use special programs that allow you to test a combination of different models of processors and video cards. Utilities are ideal for such tasks - 3DMark06 and 3DMark Vantage. It is enough to run one of them, enter the models of those parts for the PC that you plan to purchase, and the program will show which video card to choose for the processor.

Cooling and power

The video card is the most power-consuming PC part. If the power supply is not able to provide the specified power, then you will not have to rely on the normal operation of the video card. If your power supply is rated for 600 W, then in the characteristics of the video card purchased, the power consumption should be about 550 W.In addition to the increased power consumption, the video card is also distinguished by the fact that it heats up more than other devices in the computer. For a normal heat sink, you need to order a video card equipped with several powerful fans.

CrossFire and SLI technology

Trying to choose a video card to a computer, pay attention to whether it supports CrossFire or SLI technology, which allows you to install and integrate two or more video cards in a computer, in order to improve graphic performance, if necessary.

GPU

The higher the frequency, the faster the video card will be able to process graphic information. This parameter has the greatest impact on the performance of the video card.

Video memory

It stores the image formed by the graphics processor, in other words, everything that we can see on the monitor. Video memory can be of different types. Its varieties are classified according to the speed of information transfer and frequency. If you decide to choose a video card for your PC, then it is recommended to give preference to more modern devices - GDDR5.
