The tree on which grows 40 kinds of fruit
Sam Van Aken, an artist and professor from the USA, creates trees on which up to 40 kinds of different fruits can grow at the same time. Most of the year the tree looks normal, and in the spring the entire crown is filled with multi-colored buds. In hybrid trees, up to 40 types of fruits are ripe, including various varieties of plums, peaches, apricots, nectarines and cherries.
"The Tree of 40 Fruits" brings the harvest every year, and when it blooms, it looks simply amazing: a large number of flowers of various shapes, sizes and shades appear on it.
Fruiting occurs sequentially, in accordance with the biological rhythm of each species.
Initially, all this was conceived as an art object, says the professor. "I wanted people to see how the tree blossoms in different colors, and all fruits mature at the same time," the scientist notes.
A new orchard on one tree will be grown on the adjacent territory of the Discovery Children's Museum in San Jose and will become part of the environmental education program.
