The Feeling - I Thought It Was Over

Was That What I Thought It Was?

Something odd happened the other night. I'm not entirely sure but I kinda sorta think I might have maybe, just potentially, been ever so slightly flirted with. Possibly. And I have absolutely no idea what to do with that so I'm just going to muse on it until I'm sure it will turn out to be just my imagination after all.

It came out of nowhere. A local policeman was patrolling and saw Anna on her bike – apparently she wasn't riding close enough to the curb and he was concerned (and rightly so), so he pulled over to speak to her and asked her to come in the house and fetch me so that we could both basically scare her straight. It worked, too – she was terrified that she was in serious trouble and I daresay she'll be a little more diligent about following the rules of the road.

As we stood talking, David (who was wondering where I was) came running out of the house, and to my embarassment, he was only half-clothed. He grabbed his bike helmet and attempted to jump on his bike and go riding. I had to stop him, of course – he was barely dressed and he's not allowed to ride without me. The policeman looked a bit confused at that and I explained that David was autistic and needed supervision on his bicycle. He smiled very kindly and said "Hey, he grabbed his helmet first thing. Great job, Mom!" It made me feel terrific.

We stood there making some more small talk when he asked me if I was a single Mom. I said yes and he said "You've got a lot on your plate." I just shrugged and said "You do what you have to do, y'know?" He assured me that he'd be on the watch for my kids – especially David- whenever he was patrolling around here. I thanked him and then we laughed and shared some anecdotes and finally, I made Anna thank him for watching out for her. Then we said goodbye. Twice. Because we couldn't stop talking. And I kept thinking "He'sawfullygood-looking…"

Then I walked back in the house and Anna rolled her eyes and said "He was acting like he liked you, Mom." I stared at her. "No," I replied. "He was just being nice, Anna. Besides, he could be married with five kids or something."

"He wasn't wearing a ring," she said. "And he's older. Like you."

Ouch.

He wasn't wearing a ring?

Nah. I'm just making too much of this. I'm sure of it. But secretly, it sure feels good to think it might have been true….

Possibly.
